Let's talk about the safety of our ingredients

September 29, 2016

We believe ingredients matter.

If you are conscientious about the ingredients you and your family use in skin care and cosmetics, you are likely aware of the Skin Deep Database of the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

You will also know that our body care products are listed in Skin Deep and score very well. Ingredients -- safe, high quality ingredients -- are very important to us here at Seed. They always have been. Back in 2011, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics named us a Brand Champion (find us under Graine de Vie/SEED in their listings), which means that we met the following criteria:

  • Complied with the European Union’s Cosmetics Directive, widely considered the global gold standard of cosmetics safety regulation.
  • Disclosed all ingredients, including chemicals in “fragrance,” a complex mix of ingredients found in 40 percent of all personal care products; in the U.S., the components of “fragrance” can be shielded as a trade secret, even when the chemical cocktail contains hormone disruptors, carcinogens and other harmful substances.
  • Published and regularly updated product information in Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep cosmetics database so that consumers had ready, online access to listings of all product ingredients.
  • Complied with any additional ingredient prohibitions and restrictions under the Compact for Safe Cosmetics and substituted ingredients of concern with safer alternatives.
  • Participated in the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

Seed is a Skin Deep safe skincare brand

Let's look at the safety of our ingredients

You can find our body care products and their safety ratings in the Skin Deep Database. Click here for Seed Body Care in the Skin Deep Database. We are very proud of our safety scores. Our products are in the "green zone", all earning between a 1-2. The lower the score, the better and you really can feel confident when your products are in the green color zone.

We have been asked recently why some of our products are not yet listed in the Skin Deep Database. To be 100% candid, right now some of them cannot be listed. You see, to be considered, a company must list all ingredients right on the bottle and we do not. YES, we disclose all ingredients to you and very openly! Every single ingredient is listed on the website. With our facial care, we include ingredient cards in each package.

"This allows us to minimize packaging (in the case of lip) and to use the same packaging for multiple items.  (instead of 4 labels for the back of facial cleanser, we have 1, for example.  On Lip Gloss, we have two labels per package, one with white printing, one with black, and it allows us to launch new lip colors easily without having to reprint new labels all the time, " says Rebecca Gournay, our co-founder.

This makes the products available at an affordable price point without sacrificing the quality of ingredients, raising prices, or wasting the earth's valuable resources.

We want to take the guesswork out of the EWG score, though. What we're going to do is use their scoring system and post detailed info right here on the blog. Today, we are going to do this with the Advanced Botanicals Facial Cleansers and Moisturizer so you can see how they score. We have never shied away from transparency and would like to be up front with you, as always.

Expressing Gratitude This Holiday Season
Expressing Gratitude This Holiday Season

December 03, 2019

Today is Giving Tuesday, a day when millions engage in charitable acts.

I'd like to expand on the topic of giving.

The greatest gift you can give a person, I believe, is expressing your gratitude. Making someone feel loved and appreciated is a true gift. Don’t wait for “later” or a “more convenient time” to show your gratitude for the people you love.

Whether it's your significant other, parents, friends, your child's teacher or a neighbor, wouldn't it be really amazing if you took a moment to show someone your gratitude each day?

I have some ideas for ways you can show those you care about how much you appreciate them.

Seed Extra Moisturizing Face Cream Features Hyaluronic Acid
The Skin Care Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid

November 19, 2019

Hyaluronic acid may be one of the most misunderstood ingredients in skin care. When people see the word acid, they often associate it with a component of chemical exfoliants like alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acid. Do not let the word acid scare you. It's not what you think it is.

Seed Lip Balms and Lip Oils deliver beautiful soft lips
Seed Tips: How to Get Beautiful, Soft Lips

November 05, 2019

Are petrolatum-based balms the key to soft lips?

What is the first thing most people reach for when their lips are feeling dry? If you answered the traditional balm for chapped lips sold at the drugstore, you're right. Unfortunately, a crude oil-derived balm is not the best choice.

It's a common misconception that these balms help deliver moisture to the lips.

Here's what Dr. Mauro C. Rumita, who specializes in esthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery says on the subject: "Contrary to what most people believe, [some] don't hydrate the lips. Instead, they seal moisture out, so lips can't absorb it."

Do you need a physical barrier like a balm can provide? Yes, in certain situations. If you are outdoors a lot and exposed to the elements, it would be best to consider a natural balm to give your lips a layer of protection from Mother Nature. While a balm does not deliver moisture into the lips, it does protect.

Our plant based Seed Soft Balm protects without the most common ingredient found in lip balm: petrolatum. Not familiar with petrolatum? Here is a link to more information from the Skin Deep Database. It includes petrolatum's common synonyms, including "mineral grease." I don't know about you, but I don't want that on my lips.
